Why is it Important to Enroll in Medicare?
It is important to still enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B if eligible, even if you are receiving care at the VA because of the following reasons:
1. You are enrolled in one of the VA lower priority groups and could potentially loose your benefits
2. A local VA facility is not easily accessible for you based on where you live
3. You have the OPTION to utilize local doctors and hospitals. If you want to get that 2nd opinion then go for it, if you need an urgent surgery asap then you can get that done through a large nationwide network of private doctors and hospitals.
Let's Talk Cost ...
Medicare Part A comes at a $0 cost for those that have contributed enough working hours towards social security.
Medicare Part B however does have a monthly premium that is based off income which typically runs $144.00 a month.
With that said, if your total income is below a certain amount based off the state of residence, then you could qualify to have your state pay for your Part B premium.
Its called the Medicare Savings Program
